Darbukaisapercussioninstrumentthathasagobletshape.Itnarrowsinthemiddleandwidensbackattheotherend.Theheadoftheinstrumentiswiderthantheotherend.Thetraditionaldarbukashavesheep,goatandfishskinforthegoodqualitysoundalthoughcontemporaryoneshavechemicalskincalled“glassskin”.Thispreventsthedarbukafrompoppingortearingsothatithasalongerlife.Thebodyofthetraditionaldarbukasusedbemadeofwroughtcopperbutnowadays,castingtechniqueisusedforabettersound.Nacrecoatingcanbeusedforornamentationonsometypes.
Darbukaisplayedwhileseatedorwithstrapsstandingup.Itissituatedundertheplayersarmwiththeheadoftheinstrumentpointedattheknees.Itcanalsobeplayedstandingupinordertoallowtheplayertodanceorwalkaroundwhileplaying.Theplayercanplayitsimplybyusinghis/herhands.Althoughithasdifferentstylesandrhythmstoit,itisfairlyeasytoplayit.Thankstoitsplayfulsound,itiswidelyusedattheweddingsorforentertainmentpurposes.
