Nonograms,alsoknownaspic-a-pix,startedappearinginJapanesepuzzlemagazines.NonIshidapublishedthreepicturegridpuzzlesin1988inJapanunderthenameof"WindowArtPuzzles".Subsequentlyin1990,JamesDalgetyintheUKinventedthenameNonogramsafterNonIshida,andTheSundayTelegraphstartedpublishingthemonaweeklybasis.
Injapanesenonogramsthenumbersareaformofdiscretetomographythatmeasureshowmanyunbrokenlinesoffilled-insquaresthereareinanygivenroworcolumn.Forexample,aclueof"483"wouldmeantherearesetsoffour,eight,andthreefilledsquares,inthatorder,withatleastoneblanksquarebetweensuccessivegroups.TosolveJapanesenonogram,oneneedstodeterminewhichsquareswillbefilledandwhichwillbeempty.
Thesenonogramsareoftenblackandwhite,describingabinaryimage,buttheycanalsobecolored.Ifcolored,thenumbercluesarealsocoloredtoindicatethecolorofthesquares.Insuchcrosswordtwodifferentlycolorednumbersmayhaveaspaceinbetweenthem.Forexample,ablackfourfollowedbyaredtwocouldmeanfourblackboxes,someemptyspaces,andtworedboxes,oritcouldsimplymeanfourblackboxesfollowedimmediatelybytworedones.
