InAlchemists,twotofourbuddingalchemistscompetetodiscoverthesecretsoftheirmysticalart.Pointscanbeearnedinvariousways,butmostpointsareearnedbypublishingtheories–correcttheories,thatis—andthereinliestheproblem.

Thegameisplayedinsixrounds.Atthebeginningoftheround,playerschoosetheirplayorder.Thosewhochoosetoplaylatergetmorerewards.
Playersdeclarealltheiractionsbyplacingcubesonthevariousactionspaces,theneachactionspaceisevaluatedinorder.Playersgainknowledgebymixingingredientsandtestingtheresultsusingasmartphoneapp(iOS,Android,andalsoWindows)thatrandomizestherulesofalchemyforeachnewgame.Andifthealchemistsarelongingforsomethingevenmorespecial,theycanalwaysbuymagicalartifactstogetanextrapush.Thereare9ofthem(differentforeachgame)andtheyarenotonlyverypowerful,butalsoveryexpensive.Butmoneymeansnothing,whenthere'sacademicprideatstake!Andthepossessionoftheseartifactswilldefinitelyearnyousomereputationtoo.Playerscanalsoearnmoneybysellingpotionsofquestionablequalitytoadventurers,butmoneyisjustameanstoanend.Thealchemistsdon'twantriches,afterall.Theywantrespect,andrespectusuallycomesfrompublishingtheories.

Duringplay,players'reputationswillgoupanddown.Aftersixroundsandafinalexhibition,reputationwillbeconvertedintopoints.Pointswillalsobescoredforartifactsandgrants.Thenthesecretsofalchemyarerevealedandplayersscorepointsorlosepointsbasedonwhethertheirtheorieswerecorrect.Whoeverhasthemostpointsattheendofthegamewins.
