TheERGcontainsanindexedlistofdangerousgoodsandtheassociatedIDnumber,thegeneralhazardstheyposeandrecommendedsafetyprecautions.Forexample,ifemergencyrespondersarriveatthesceneofanoverturnedtractortrailerdisplayingaDOThazmatplacard,theywouldusetheguidetoidentifythematerialassociatedwiththeplacardandgetguidanceonhowtorespondaccordingly.

The2016versionoftheERGincludesgeneralrevisions,reorganizedgeneralinformationpages,andtheadditionofprotectivedistancemapping.Updatedeveryfouryears,theERGisavailablefreetopublicsafetyagenciesinallstatesandterritoriesthroughdesignatedstatecoordinators’offices.PHMSAhaspartneredwiththeNationalLibraryofMedicinetoprovidethisfreeapplicationaswellasaversionoftheERGinitsWirelessInformationSystemforEmergencyResponders(WISER)application.
