TheBible(fromKoineGreekτὰβιβλία,tàbiblía,"thebooks")isacanonicalcollectionoftextsconsideredsacredinJudaismaswellasinChristianity.ThetermBibleissharedbetweenthetworeligions,althoughthecontentsofeachoftheircollectionsofcanonicaltextsisnotthesame.Differentreligiousgroupsincludedifferentbookswithintheircanons,indifferentorders,andsometimesdivideorcombinebooks,orincorporateadditionalmaterialintocanonicalbooks.

TheHebrewBible,orTanakh,containstwenty-fourbooksdividedintothreeparts:thefivebooksoftheTorah("teaching"or"law"),theNevi'im("prophets"),andtheKetuvim("writings").

ChristianBiblesrangefromthesixty-sixbooksoftheProtestantcanontotheeighty-onebooksoftheEthiopianOrthodoxChurchcanon.ThefirstpartofChristianBiblesistheOldTestament,whichcontains,atminimum,thetwenty-fourbooksoftheHebrewBibledividedintothirty-ninebooksandordereddifferentlythantheHebrewBible.TheCatholicChurchandEasternChristianchurchesalsoholdcertaindeuterocanonicalbooksandpassagestobepartoftheOldTestamentcanon.ThesecondpartistheNewTestament,containingtwenty-sevenbooks:thefourCanonicalgospels,ActsoftheApostles,twenty-oneEpistlesorletters,andtheBookofRevelation.

Bythe2ndcenturyBCEJewishgroupshadcalledtheBiblebooks"holy,"andChristiansnowcommonlycalltheOldandNewTestamentsoftheChristianBible"TheHolyBible"(τὰβιβλίατὰἅγια,tàbiblíatàágia)or"theHolyScriptures"(ηΑγίαΓραφή,eAgíaGraphḗ).ManyChristiansconsiderthewholecanonicaltextoftheBibletobedivinelyinspired.TheoldestsurvivingcompleteChristianBiblesareGreekmanuscriptsfromthe4thcentury.TheoldestTanakhmanuscriptinHebrewandAramaicdatestothe10thcenturyCE,butanearly4th-centurySeptuaginttranslationisfoundintheCodexVaticanus.
TheBiblewasdividedintochaptersinthe13thcenturybyStephenLangtonandintoversesinthe16thcenturybyFrenchprinterRobertEstienneandisnowusuallycitedbybook,chapter,andverse.TheBiblehasestimatedannualsalesof25millioncopies,andhasbeenamajorinfluenceonliteratureandhistory,especiallyintheWestwhereitwasthefirstmassprintedbook.
