ThedevelopmentofIslamiccalligraphyisstronglytiedtotheQur'an;chaptersandexcerptsfromtheQur'anareacommonandalmostuniversaltextuponwhichIslamiccalligraphyisbased.However,Islamiccalligraphyisnotlimitedtostrictlyreligioussubjects,objects,orspaces.LikeallIslamicart,itencompassesadiversearrayofworkscreatedinawidevarietyofcontexts.TheprevalenceofcalligraphyinIslamicartisnotdirectlyrelatedtoitsnon-figuraltradition;rather,itreflectsthecentralityofthenotionofwritingandwrittentextinIslam.Itisnoteworthy,forinstance,thattheProphetMuhammadisrelatedtohavesaid:"ThefirstthingGodcreatedwasthepen."
Islamiccalligraphydevelopedfromtwomajorstyles:KuficandNaskh.Thereareseveralvariationsofeach,aswellasregionallyspecificstyles.Islamiccalligraphyhasalsobeenincorporatedintomodernartbeginningwiththepost-colonialperiodintheMiddleEast,aswellasthemorerecentstyleofcalligraffiti.
