Atthebeginningofeachgame,13cardsaredistributedtoeachplayerinacounter-clockwise.Theplayerwiththe3♦(HongKongVariant)or3♣(TaiwanVariant)startsbyeitherplayingitsinglyoraspartofacombination,leadingtothefirsttrick.Playproceedscounter-clockwise,withnormalclimbing-gamerulesapplying:eachplayermustplayahighercardorcombinationthantheonebefore,withthesamenumberofcards.Playersmayalsopass,thusdeclaringthathedoesnotwanttoplay.Apassdoesnothinderanyfurtherplayinthegame.Whenallbutoneoftheplayershavepassedinsuccessionthetrickisoverandanewtrickisstartedbythelastplayertoplay.

Theplayersarenotallowedtoplayadifferenttypeof5-cardcombinationoverthecurrent.i.e.aFullHousecannotbeplayedoveraStraight.Anhonourhand(fourofakindplusacardorastraightflush)canbeplayednotonlytobeatalower5-cardhand,butalsotobeatsingles,pairsortriples.
Cardsmaybeplayedassinglesoringroupsoftwo,three,orfive,incombinationswhichresemblepokerhands.Theleadingcardtoatricksetsdownthenumberofcardstobeplayed;allthecardsofatrickmustcontainthesamenumberofcards.Thecombinationsandtheirrankingsareasfollows:
