TheoriginsofCallBreakisunknown,butmanybelieveitisderivedfromthetrick-basedgameSpades.CallBreak(alsoknownasLakdi/Lakadi)isapopularcardgameinNepalandIndia.InCallBreaktheterm"hand"isusedinsteadoftrick,and"call"isusedinsteadofbid.Aftereachdeal,eachplayerhastomakeacallforthenumberofhandshe/shecancapture,andtheobjectiveistocaptureatleastthatmanyhandsinaroundandtrytobreakanotherplayer,i.e.,stopthemfromgettingtheircall.
Deal&Call
CallBreakisafour-playercardgamewiththespadeasthetrumpcard.CallBreakusesastandard52-carddeck.Therearefiveroundsofplay(deals)inagame.Thefirstdealerischosenrandomly,andthencardsaredealtcounterclockwisefromthefirstdealer.Eachplayergets13cards,andthenthegamebeginswitheachplayercallingtheirpossiblewinninghands.Thefirstplayertoplaceacallistheplayerleftofthedealer.Afterthefirstplayerplacestheircall,callsaremadeinacounterclockwiserotationuntilallfourplayershaveplacedtheircalls.
GamePlay
Afterthecallsareplaced,theplayernexttothedealermakesthefirstmove.Thefirstplayerthrowsanycard,butthesuitthrownbythefirstplayerwillbetheleadsuit.Theotherthreeplayersmustfollowthesamesuit.Iftheremainingplayersdonothavethissuitatall,theymustbreakthisbythetrumpcard(whichisthespadecardofanyrank).Iftheydonothaveaspadeofanyrank,theycanthrowanyothercardout.Thehighestcardoftheleadsuitwinsthehand,butiftheleadsuitwasbrokenbyspade(s),thenthehighestrankedspadecardwillcapturethehand.Thewinnerofthehandleadsthenexthand.Thiscontinuesfor13handsafterwhichthenextdealbegins.

Aftereachround,eachplayergetsapointsupdate.Ifaplayercapturesatleastasmanyhandsashis/hercalls,theplayerreceivesapointforeachhand.Iftheplayercapturesextrahands,he/shereceivesone-tenthofapoint(0.10)foreachextrahand.Forexample,ifaplayerplacesabetforthreecallsandcapturesfourhands,he/shewillbegiven3.1points.However,ifaplayerdoesnotcaptureatleastasmanyhandsashis/hercalls,theplayerreceivesanegativepointforeachhand.Forexample,ifaplayerplacesabetforfourcallsandcapturestwohands,he/shewillbegiven-2points.

Jutpatti((जुटपत्ती)isoneoftheeasiestgamesyouwilleverplayandisprobablythefirstgamepeoplelearntoplayinNepalandIndia.
Therulesaresimple.Jutpattiisacardgamethatisplayedwithanoddnumberofcards(5,7,9,11).Aftereachplayerisdealttherequirednumberofcardsinahand,thetopcardoftheremainingdeckdeterminesthe‘joker.’Eachplayernowhastomakecardpairssothateachpairequalsthe‘joker’number.Untilthepairsaremade,playersthrowoutcards,fetchcardsfromthedeckorgrabcardsthrownoutbyotherplayers.Theplayerwhocanmakealloftheircardsintopairsfirstwinsthegame.
