JamesgavethetranslatorsinstructionsintendedtoguaranteethatthenewversionwouldconformtotheecclesiologyandreflecttheepiscopalstructureoftheChurchofEnglandanditsbeliefinanordainedclergy.Thetranslationwasdoneby47scholars,allofwhomweremembersoftheChurchofEngland.Incommonwithmostothertranslationsoftheperiod,theNewTestamentwastranslatedfromGreek,theOldTestamentwastranslatedfromHebrewtext,whiletheApocryphaweretranslatedfromtheGreekandLatin.
TheBiblicalapocrypha(fromtheGreekwordἀπόκρυφος,apókruphos,meaning"hidden")denotesthecollectionofancientbooksfound,insomeeditionsoftheBible,inaseparatesectionbetweentheOldandNewTestamentsorasanappendixaftertheNewTestament.Althoughthetermapocryphahadbeeninusesincethe5thcentury,itwasinLuther'sBibleof1534thattheApocryphawasfirstpublishedasaseparateintertestamentalsection.Lutherwasmakingapolemicalpointaboutthecanonicityofthesebooks.Asanauthorityforthisdivision,hecitedSt.Jerome,whointheearly5thcenturydistinguishedtheHebrewandGreekOldTestaments,statingthatbooksnotfoundintheHebrewwerenotreceivedascanonical.Althoughhisstatementwascontroversialinhisday,JeromewaslatertitledaDoctoroftheChurchandhisauthoritywasalsocitedintheAnglicanstatementin1571oftheThirty-NineArticles.
