MatthewHenry'swell-knownsix-volumeExpositionoftheOldandNewTestaments(1708–1710)orCompleteCommentary,providesanexhaustiveversebyversestudyoftheBible.coveringthewholeoftheOldTestament,andtheGospelsandActsintheNewTestament.Aftertheauthor'sdeath,theworkwasfinished(RomansthroughRevelation)bythirteenothernonconformistministers,partlybaseduponnotestakenbyHenry'shearers,andeditedbyGeorgeBurderandJohnHughesin1811.

MatthewHenry'scommentariesareprimarilyexegetical,dealingwiththescripturetextaspresented,withhisprimeintentionbeingexplanation,forpracticalanddevotionalpurposes.Whilenotbeingaworkoftextualresearch,forwhichHenryrecommendedMatthewPoole'sSynopsisCriticorum,Henry'sExpositiongivestheresultofacriticalaccountoftheoriginalasofhistime,withpracticalapplication.Itwasconsideredsensibleandstylish,acommentaryfordevotionalpurposes.

FamousevangelicalProtestantpreacherssuchasGeorgeWhitefieldandCharlesSpurgeonusedandheartilycommendedthework,withWhitefieldreadingitthroughfourtimes-thelasttimeonhisknees.Spurgeonstated,"Everyministeroughttoreaditentirelyandcarefullythroughonceatleast."

Henry'sreputationrestsuponhisrenownedcommentary,AnExpositionoftheOldandNewTestaments(1708-10,knownalsoasMatthewHenry'sCommentaryontheWholeBible).HelivedtocompleteitonlyasfarastotheendoftheActs,butafterhisdeathotherlike-mindedauthorspreparedtheremainderfromHenry'smanuscripts.ThisworkwaslongcelebratedasthebestEnglishcommentaryfordevotionalpurposesandtheexpandededitionwasinitiallypublishedin1896.Insteadofcriticalexposition,Henryfocusesonpracticalsuggestion,andhiscommentariescontainsrichstoresoftruths.
