Surah Noor

An-Nur(Arabic:الْنُّور‎,"TheLight")isthe24thchapter(sūrah)oftheQuranwith64verses(āyāt).

ThegeneralagreementofscholarsisthatthissuratwasrevealedshortlybeforeoraftertheBattleoftheTrenchin5AH.Thesurahbeginswithvariousexplanationsanddecreesonorrelatingtocorruptsexualacts,familylaw,andspecificationsonthegivingoftestimony.ForemostamongsttheserulingsisGod'spunishmentforadultery.Thissectionendswiththepronouncementthatgoodmenandwomenshouldbepairedtogether,asshouldcorruptmenandcorruptwomen.Thisdiscussionturnsintoreflectionsonprivacyandmodesty,namelyofhostsandwomen.Containedhereinareseveralregulationsandexplanationsofmodesty,mostdirectlylinestraditionallyusedtoargueforthewearingofhijab.Aftertheseprohibitionsarecastforwomen,thetextturnstowardsmen,askingthemnottooppressslavegirlsintoprostitution,andtomarrythosewomenwhoneedhusbands,despitetheirpoverty.

Exegesis
TheZaniyahandtheZani,flogeachofthemwithahundredstripes.Letnotpitywithholdyouintheircase,inapunishmentprescribedbyAllah,ifyoubelieveinAllahandtheLastDay.

TafsirIbnKathir(Kasir/Kaseer)saysinrelationtothewitnessingoftheirpunishment:"Thisismorehumiliatingforthepeoplewhoareguiltyofillegalsex,iftheyarefloggedinfrontofthepeople.Thisisbecauseitismoreeffectiveasadeterrentanditconveysthesenseofscandalandrebuke".

Andthosewhoaccusechastewomen,andproducenotfourwitnesses,flogthemwitheightystripes,andrejecttheirtestimonyforever.Theyindeedaretherebellious.Exceptthosewhorepentthereafteranddorighteousdeeds;(forsuch)verily,AllahisOft-Forgiving,MostMerciful.

InTafsirIbnKathir,theprescribedpunishmentformakingfalseaccusationsagainstchastemenorwomenistoflogthemwitheightystripes,andrejecttheirtestimonyforever.

AfterasecondstatementoftheQuran'sstatusasaclearsignfromAllah,thefamedAyatan-Nurappears.Thisisoftenreferredtoas"theLightVerse",or"theParableofLight",amysticalgroupoflinesthathasbeenthesubjectofmuchscholarshipandreflection.

InthecommentaryofBurhanitisnarratedfromImamJa’faras-Sadiq(a.s.)thatwhoeverconstantlyrecitesSuratan-Nurwillnever,inhislifetime,seeanyevilfromhisnearonesandwhenhedies,seventythousandangelswillaccompanyhisbodyuptothegraveandwillprayforhisforgiveness.

TheHolyProphet(S.A.W)saidthatitisespeciallygoodforwomentorecitethisSurahAl-Noor.He(PBUH)alsosaidthattherewardforrecitingthisSurahisequaltotentimesthenumberofmu’mineenandmu’minaatontheEarth.ThesixthImam(a.s.)saidthatkeepingthisSurahinone’sbedpreventswetdreams.

AlQuransurahAnNuryangmemudahkanandajikainginmurojaahkhususuntuksurahAnNur.YangperluandatahutentangsuratAnNurYaituterdiriatas64ayat,urutansuratke24yangditurunkandikotaMadinahdanmempunyaiarti“cahaya”.KandungandarisuratiniadalahmenjelaskantentangNurIlahi,yakniAl-Quranyangmengandungpetunjuk-petunjuk.Petunjuk-petunjukAllahitu,merupakancahayayangterangbenderangmenerangialamsemesta.Suratinisebagianbesarisinyamemuatpetunjuk-petunjukAllahyangberhubungandengansoalkemasyarakatandanrumahtangga.
