METHODOLOGY

ThisEnglishtranslationoftheBibleseekstouselanguagefeaturesthatarecommontomostAustralianAboriginallanguages.Thisaffectsthevocabulary,grammarandrhetoricaldevices.Itfollowsameaningbasedtranslationprinciplesothatitseekstoconveythesamemeaningastheoriginalauthorsconveyedtotheoriginalreaders.

Languagefeaturesinclude:

-Nopassivevoice,sincemostIndigenousAustralianlanguagesdonothavepassivevoice.
-Verbsandadjectivesinsteadofmostabstractnouns,sinceabstractnounsarerareinAustralianlanguages.
-ShortersentencestoconformtothegrammarsofAustralianlanguages.
-Wheretheoriginaltexthasimplicitinformationthatwouldnotbeobvioustothetargetaudience,thatinformationhasbeenmadeexplicit.
-Modifiedvocabulary,accordingtowhatiscommonlyunderstoodbythetargetaudience.
-Wheretheoriginaltexthasusedfigurativelanguagethatcouldbetakenasliteralbythetargetaudiencethemeaninghasbeenstated.
