Journeymanelectriciansareelectriciansthatarepartwaythroughthetrainingprocess,withthegoalofbecomingamasterelectrician.Electriciansinstallandrepairwiringandelectricalsystemsinresidences,factoriesandbusinesses.Theywillinspectthewiring,circuitbreakersandtransformersaspartoftheirdutiesandtheyneedtobefamiliarwithbuildingcoderegulationstoensurethatalloftheelectricalworkdoneonaprojectisuptocode.Theyalsoneedtoknowhowtoreadblueprintssothattheycanensurethatsystemsareinstalledcorrectlyandthatthey'reintherightplace.Electricianslearnthroughanapprenticeship,andsomemayopttoattendtechnicalschool.
Journeymanelectriciansareelectricianswhohaveacquiredthetrainingandexperiencenecessarytoworkindependently,butwhohavenotattainedlicensureasmasterelectricians.Journeymanelectriciansmayworkwithelectricalwires,fixturesandcontrolsystemsincommercial,industrialandresidentialbuildings,buttypicallydonotdesigntheinitialelectricalsystemforabuilding,whichisusuallydonebyamasterelectrician.
Asajourneymanelectrician,youcouldinstalllightingandsecuritysystemsorconnecttransformers,circuitbreakers,switchesandoutlets.Youmayalsoinspectandtesttheintegrityofexistingwiringsystemsandsupervisetheworkofapprentices.
Electriciansaretrainedtooneofthreelevels:Apprentice,Journeyman,andMasterElectrician.IntheUSandCanada,apprenticesworkandreceiveareducedcompensationwhilelearningtheirtrade.Theygenerallytakeseveralhundredhoursofclassroominstructionandarecontractedtofollowapprenticeshipstandardsforaperiodofbetweenthreeandsixyears,duringwhichtimetheyarepaidasapercentageoftheJourneyman'spay.JourneymenareelectricianswhohavecompletedtheirApprenticeshipandwhohavebeenfoundbythelocal,State,orNationallicensingbodytobecompetentintheelectricaltrade.MasterElectricianshaveperformedwellinthetradeforaperiodoftime,oftenseventotenyears,andhavepassedanexamtodemonstratesuperiorknowledgeoftheNationalElectricalCode,orNEC.
